What is the makesense community ?

7 years ago, makesense began with volunteers, people around the world who wanted to help social entrepreneurs develop solutions to global challenges. It was their way of taking action on issues that were much bigger than them. Over the years, more and more volunteers and social entrepreneurs joined along the way, creating a global network of thousands of engaged people: the makesense community.

Who are the volunteers?

The makesense volunteers come from all backgrounds, in more than 130 countries around the world. There are students and professionals; some are curious about a topic when others are experts. They all want to take action on social and environmental issues – and they want to do it collectively.

What do
they do?

Volunteers organize offline events gathering citizens and social entrepreneurs to create or develop social projects. There are all sorts of events; some last a couple of hours when others last several days. Most of them are based on collective intelligence principles and methodologies.

Why get involved?

There are many reasons to join the community: meet inspiring change makers, contribute to fighting climate change or to developing circular economy, take action in favor of refugees, create connections between people, learn about collective intelligence… The best way for you to make up your mind is to meet us in real life and see it by yourself. See what? The makesense spirit!

How to get involved?

Getting involved is easy. Get in touch with the group of volunteers in your city. If there isn’t any local community around you, you can contact the community developer in your region. In both cases, they will lead you through the makesense ecosystem to help you find your way.

_FAQ

I am not sure I understood well what makesense is. Where can I find more information?

OpenClose

Because makesense doesn’t fit in any category, it can be difficult to understand what it is. Have a look at the “Know more” section. There, you will find more information on who we are and what we do. You will also have the opportunity to register for an online presentation of makesense by Lauren, a member of our team.

I want to join, but I don't have much time to offer. How much time do volunteers have to dedicate?

OpenClose

Each volunteer chooses how much he/she wants to get involved and what amount of time he/she is willing to dedicate to organizing events and strengthening his/her local community. Some of them, especially those starting or developing a local community, spend almost 10 hours per week for months connecting with their local ecosystem. Some others facilitate events from times to times, volunteering a couple of hours for two weeks and then taking some time off makesense. All contributions are welcome. Remember: you are the master of your engagement journey within the makesense community!

Do I have to apply to become a volunteer?

OpenClose

There isn’t any recruitment process of volunteers. No application is required. You simply have to connect with the volunteers in your city or in your region. We believe that everyone has something to learn and something to teach, whether it is personal experience or knowledge. So, if you wish to join us, be our guest!

Can I get paid to be involved with makesense?

OpenClose

makesense is a volunteer community of those passionate about sharing their time, skills, and networks to support impact projects. Nobody in the community makes money as the goal is to keep the community, and its support for entrepreneurs, free and open for everyone. You can make an impact, make friends, and make sense…but not make money 🙂

I would like to help social entrepreneurs or to take action for a cause as a job. Where can I find job opportunities at makesense or in other like-minded organizations?

OpenClose

Here is a list of jobs that make sense, whether it is with us or at other organizations.

What causes is makesense involved in? What is a campaign?

OpenClose

makesense is centered on social entrepreneurship and not on a single cause. You can use the makesense tools to support social enterprises tackling any cause that’s close to your heart! There are certain causes that makesense is more heavily involved with, either because of partnerships we have in place or because a community member made it happen! For a month or for a couple of years, activities focused on that cause are organized. Discover all our campaigns, here.

How can I help somebody else get involved?

Great that you know people who want to join the movement! The answer varies slightly on where the person lives:

If this person lives in your city, where you have a Hotspot: invite them to join you! A great first step is typically to attend a makesense event to experience it for yourself. From there, you can invite them to co-facilitate a workshop with you, and then next they can do so on their own. We’d recommend introducing new members in your Facebook group as well as to your Community Developer, too.

If this person lives in a different city that already has a Hotspot: connect them with the Gangsters in that city! Have your friend join the local Facebook Hotspot group and introduce themselves, or reach out to your Community Developer. The local team will help welcome them in!

-> If this person lives in a city without a Hotspot or where you’re not sure if there is one, connect them to your Community Developer, who can help them start a Hotspot or connect to the nearest one.

Lastly, if this person is interested in volunteering with makesense but on one specific cause that we have a mobilization campaign around, they also can join the appropriate Facebook group related to that cause to connect to others around the world with the same passion. We would always recommend, however, that new volunteers connect with their local Hotspots regardless, since it’s largely the offline connections we make with people that are the magic of makesense!

« My favorite makesense value: “learn, share and then learn again”. Most of the times, we remain passive actors when we are trying to learn something new. We just absorb all the knowledge, think about it for a while and then continue with our life without actually implementing what we have learnt.

One of the things I love about makesense is that everyone is passionate not only about learning but about sharing it.The members are committed to transmitting that information through practical workshops, which are incredibly useful. And the best part of it is that every sigle day there are new posts to continue going further in this journey! »
